Has anyone done an iPhone 6 battery replacement themselves? (Specific questions follow)

I have an iPhone 6. This is all you get when you plug it in. Won’t charge, won’t turn on. And Activation Locked by some Apple ID that we can NOT figure out, because teenage daughter.

After exhaustive talks with people at Apple who do a great job of sounding like they have a clue, I cannot get any two of them on two different days to tell me the same thing.

So here’s the rub: because Activation Lock, Apple will not replace the battery. They would also require me to replace the screen, but Activation Lock is the true show stopper. YouTube says that a handy guy with a couple of the correct tools should find replacing the battery to not be difficult.

Q: Will Activation Lock keep me from replacing the battery myself and turning the phone back on? (Assume phone pass code is known.)

Q: Does that screen image suggest anything other than a battery that might be wrong with this phone?

Q: Is replacing the battery in an iPhone 6 as easy as it looks on YouTube?

Q: What source(s) would you recommend for buying an iPhone 6 battery?

Q: Should I just shoot this phone with a large-caliber handgun and get on with my life?

I’ve done several battery replacements. Yes, it’s as easy as they make it seem on YouTube. I can’t remember where I bought the battery online, but I recommend looking for one that comes with the tool kit. It’s worth the extra $5.

The problem might not be the battery, but it’s a fairly cheap part to try first.

I’m assuming it’s your phone and not stolen, right ;)

Yes, battery replacement is stupid easy as long as you have the tools (usually come with the kit), a magnet to hold the screws, and good eyesight/ steady hands. I’ve replaced a couple of screens and it’s not super difficult, either. Just don’t mix up the screws (one kit I got had an image of each screw location on a magnet to keep them organized).

Also let’s talk a little bit more about the activation lock. You can’t remember the Apple ID or the password?  What’s your goal with the phone once it’s working properly?  If you totally don’t know the password and iCloud gets locked, the phone is worthless.

Now, by password, do you mean the pass code / screen lock for the phone? Assuming we know that, then would we be able to minimally learn what the Apple ID is that has the iCloud turned on? My daughter used she-doesn’t-know-what for Apple ID. But it’s legitimately our phone.

What’s your goal with the phone once it’s working properly?

I’d just rather have a functional phone than something to blast with a handgun. There might be a refugee from the Big Camp Fire up in Butte County who’d like a working iPhone 6 because theirs got burned up, for example.

I know nothing about the activation lock issue. I suspect you will end up needing to do the screen to do the battery. With it already cracked like that, it seems like a decent bet it will be destroyed when removed to get to the battery.

Of course it’s possible that something in the charging circuitry is busted rather than the battery. I assume you’ve at least tried a different charger/cable to eliminate external points of failure?

Activation lock meaning that you are locked out of the phone and don’t know the passcode , or somebody entered the wrong passcode too many times and the phone is locked now, or ?

Icloud lock is no joke, without your Apple ID and password it’s basically a brick.

Apple usually will not unlock an iCloud locked device and it will never matter that your the legitimate owner of this phone.

Basically you should’ve gotten an Android ;)

But yeah sorry, apple is pretty bad for this stuff

No you need to know the appleid and password for the account. You could try recovering the password through Itunes on a computer, but past that the phone might as well be a brick. If you can login into the account in Itunes then plug the phone into that computer and it will unlock  it.

Try this: https://www.google.com/amp/s/patch.com/us/across-america/amp/27410425/iphone-not-turning-simple-trick-will-fix

Basically heat it up with a hair dryer or heat gun and then immediately plug it in; it may start to charge. IF it does this and IF it works properly, then it’s worth fixing.

The trouble is that the phone will not turn on right now. If it turned on, the chances are I know the pass code to unlock the screen. My question is that if I know the pass code, can I change the battery, turn on the phone, unlock the screen, and discover what Apple ID owns it?

Did you try resetting it through iTunes? It wipes the phone, though it will still be linked to whatever Apple ID it was set up with....how can she forget which ID she set it up with? Apple IDs are usually your email address, so unless she changes email addresses frequently or has a million of them, it has to be one of them...?

Seems like it tries to boot periodically, but I think the battery may be complete toast. Does the phone need a certain amount of juice in the battery just to boot up, even if it’s plugged into the wall?

Yes; heating it is supposed to provide the little bit of juice to allow the lithium battery to accept charge. Since you got the Apple logo to show, it’s perhaps decent sign. Let it get hot for a bit while charging and see what happens. At least I’d say that it may be a good chance that a battery replacement will fix it.

Edit: a second possible “fix” is to plug it into a computer and keep rebooting the computer until the phone boots. It’s more of a long shot and was something that was really just used in older iPhones.

Best bet is too not go far until you can find any evidence that you can unlock the iCloud. With the iCloud locked your basically doa, because if a battery remove iCloud locks the device you will never be able to get past the lock screen to see what Apple ID your using

I hate to say it but unless you have it written down on a piece of paper, a non iCloud locked previous phone with the same account or at least some idea of what your account ID is and the email you used you might be able to do something.

I assume the charging circuit might be fried or more likely the phone draws directly from the battery and ignores the charging circuit meaning that the phone will only receive power from the battery

If it’s only screen locked (as in the past ode and not your Apple ID, which is icloud) then I see no reason why you would even need to worry about the apple Id portion. The apple ID is only necessary for function if the phone had been iCloud locked, if it’s regular locked (like power off) then it would be the same as normal use

And as before, if you need the apple ID because it’s screen locked (I assume you mean icloud locked) you won’t be able to put in your regular password to get into settings at all, you would just have a locked screen

Edit; this says it all, with the battery changed you definitely need the Icloud password.

“ At the start of 2014, Apple added a quirk to iOS7 that changed the way that iPhone accounts were made available. It was a little thing called iCloud Activation Lock . The change made to iOS 7 (and carried through to iOS10, iOS11 and iOS 12) is that your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch is now locked to your personal iCloud account.

This means when you restart your Apple device you have to enter your iCloud username and password to access the features, functions, and files.”

If not the shell would probably be a buyer's main draw to the phone, and they might pay a coie bucks for it. Probably like 25-35$?

Supposing that the battery is bad and I remove it and replace with a new one, would that keep the phone from booting as it normally would have if the battery hadn’t gone bad?

If the answer to that is “No,” then replacing the battery might give me a shot at learning the apple ID, right?

Put another way: suppose the battery has failed and that’s what the problem is with the phone. Last month the phone would boot and this month it won’t boot because croaked battery. Does the act of replacing the battery take the device to a place that would require more than the screen pass code to restart and access the device?

(Battery kits on Amazon with the tools are as little as $15-20.)

Here’s the other part: suppose the phone works fine today, and overnight, the battery fails. Today, the phone will not charge nor power on. If I remove the battery today and replace it with a new one, and problem solved, will the phone operate the same as it did last night or will I be locked out?

After exhaustive talks with people at Apple who do a great job of sounding like they have a clue, I cannot get any two of them on two different days to tell me the same thing.

You can’t really get any help at Apple until you move at least one, better two, levels up the chain Genii. The lowest level of Appletron can help you set up your email, but that’s about it.

As for the battery, I can’t help. I tend to pay to have Apple do it, since they guarantee the work and seem to know better how to do it than Omar’s phone kiosk at the mall.

Kinja'd!!! Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo > ttyymmnn
01/14/2019 at 11:22

Kinja'd!!!0

Because I do not know what Apple ID is associated with that phone, Apple will not touch it. Also, unless I am willing to pay them to replace the screen, they will not do the repair. They had the phone to replace the battery, sent me, supposedly, an email with a revised quote that I declined by not replying within ten days, then returned the phone to me with the old battery still in place. It took me four hours and more on the phone with Apple to make this discovery. None of this makes me any more fond of the idea of switching from Android.

As replacing a cell phone battery goes, it looks like the iPhone 6 is about as easy as it gets, if you have a couple of the appropriate tiny tools, and some Oppos have confirmed this supposition. So I think I am ready to order a battery and give this a try. The phone has essentially zero resale value net of what it will take to replace the battery and or screen, but hopefully it still functions properly and can be used by a victim of the Camp Fire who lost everything else.
